Our Top 5 Summer Snacks






We love the summer – the sun begins to shine brighter, the days get a little longer and in turn, the foods required by the body are often lighter. While summer climes can mean we are less inclined to crave warm and heavy foods, our cooler options should be just as satisfying and nutritious. No watery pre-packaged salads or tasteless rice cakes here please!
Here are our top five summer snacks – enjoy them in the office, at home, at a picnic, on the go or even in your bed with a good book if you so wish. And of course, don’t forget to drink plenty of water. We know you hear it often, but it’s important to stay properly hydrated for optimum health. Two litres a day is ideal and ensuring it is as pure as possible – we love filtered or mineral – is key.

Macadamia Nuts – Macadamias may not get as much praise as say, almonds, but they are hands-down one of our favourite nuts! We?re dubbing this sweet, creamy, crunchy, and luxurious nut the next big ?it? ingredient and here?s why. These tasty little powerhouses of minerals have the best Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio of all nuts. The modern diet is full of pro-inflammatory omega-6, so make topping up on omega-3 a priority in order to balance out the often distorted ratio. What?s more, unlike other nuts, they don?t require soaking or ‘activating’ so you can just grab a bag and go! Phew.

Stuffed Celery – ‘Ants on a log’ is the jazzy name for peanut butter-filled celery sticks topped with raisins that emerged in the Fifties as a fashionable, healthful snack. We?ve updated it with creamy calcium-rich tahini, a drizzle of raw honey and some chewy goji berries – perfect with the juicy, satisfying crunch of a celery stick. For a tangy palate cleanser, swap the honey for a squeeze of lemon.

Crunchy Chickpeas – These healthy fibre- and protein-rich bites are so easy to make there?s no need to reach for the vending machine when you crave a crunchy snack. Gently roast in coconut oil with sea salt and spices of your choice. We love cumin and a hint of cayenne – both superfood spices. Forget nachos – they won?t seem quite so tempting once you?ve tasted these.

Miso Seaweed Bowl – We love fermented foods and good quality, unpasteurised, organic miso is one of our favourites. It?s rich in antioxidants and good bacteria. Add hot water to a sprinkle of seaweed, stir in some miso paste and a squeeze of lime and enjoy from your favourite mug or bowl. When hunger strikes, seaweed is a fantastic port of call, thanks to its high protein content. It contains more vitamin C than oranges and has anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. It may seem odd to suggest a hot broth as a summer snack, but it?s not just an old wives’ tale that a hot drink in the heat will keep you cool.
